Crime prevention - Vehicle crime

We have noticed in the Morpeth Town area particularly in recent weeks a number of cases of vehicle interference and thefts from vehicles.

We have been informed the vast number of thefts from these vehicles have been from those which have been left insecure.

Officers from the Morpeth Neighbourhood Team are collating the evidence for these crimes with a view of taking positive action against any identified offenders.

Response and Neighbourhood staff will also be out in unformed and plain clothes patrols throughout the night and will stop and search where circumstances allow any persons acting in a suspicion manner.

However, the fact remains that theft from motor vehicle is opportunity in nature and very easy to prevent by simply removing items from your vehicle when you leave it unoccupied whilst making sure the vehicle is locked securely.

Do's and Don'ts To Avoid Car Crime

Do'sDon'ts
Do lock your vehicle every time you leave it, even if just for a few moments.Don't leave your vehicle unlocked, even if you're stepping away for only a brief period.
Do use a garage for parking your vehicle if one is available and ensure it is locked.Don't leave your garage unlocked if you're storing your vehicle in it.
Do store vehicle keys and ignition fobs in secure and non-visible places.Don't leave keys or ignition fobs in the vehicle or easily accessible locations.
Do take measures to protect against relay theft, such as storing keys in a security pouch.Don't neglect to update your vehicle's security software.
Do remove any visible valuables from your vehicle.Don't leave items like mobile phones, electronic devices, or bags on display in your vehicle.
Do Park responsibly, preferably in approved car parks when away from home.Don't park your vehicle in areas known for high levels of vehicle crime.
Do secure your number plates with one-way security screws.Don't leave your number plates unsecured, making it easy for thieves to remove them.
Do use steering wheel or gear lever locks for added security.Don't leave your vehicle unsecured, even if it is parked in your driveway or private property.
Do double-check the vehicle's locked status through auditory and visual cues.Don't rush away from your vehicle without making sure it's properly locked.
Do install a vehicle tracker to monitor your vehicle's activity and location.Don't ignore the benefits of vehicle tracking systems due to cost or installation concerns.

A number of posts have been seen on Facebook regarding these crimes. As such we are encouraging people to check their Ring doorbells and cameras then report such incidents to the Police.
