Good evening, Alnwick Neighbourhood Team have been made aware of Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB) where individuals are ‘wild camping’ at both Codgers Fort and nearby Rothley Castle. It should be made clear that there is NO rights of Public access to Codgers Fort (pictured above), and while there is Public access to Rothley Castle - NO rights of access exist to go ‘wild camping’ - this is the same for all Public rights of access, where the permission of the landowner is required. Officers attended both locations today and cleared rubbish away from Codgers Fort, where a Tent and litter had unbelievably been left by those involved, with efforts now being made to identify those responsible for the fly tipping. A real risk of wild fires exist given the Moorland is at significant risk of catching fire, where offences of Criminal Damage / Arson with trees being cut and land being burned will be investigated further. Rothley Castle was built in 1755 for Sir Walter Blackett the then owner of the Wallington Estate, where it stands today as a Grade II listed structure and is on the National Heritage List. It is hugely disappointing to see a minority abuse the privilege of the rights of access to land to go 'wild camping', where they believe they have the right to damage our National Heritage. If you have any information in relation to those involved we would love to know about them - reporting of suspicious activity and incidents to Police, can be reported via 101 (in a non-emergency), 999 (in an emergency) or online via Report | Northumbria Police alternatively online to CrimeStoppers via Giving information anonymously | Crimestoppers (crimestoppers-uk.org) Regards, Peter Johnson 4187 | ||||
