Tackling Bicycle Thefts

“As well as responding to incidents and dealing with long term youth ASB issues the Cramlington neighbourhood policing team have been tackling a series of bicycle thefts around the Manor Walks area.

Officers have been working with partner agencies in the Cramlington area and with security staff at Manor Walks to identify the person responsible for these offences. Through this inter agency co-operation police identified an offender.

One male has been arrested on suspicion of eight theft offences, he has since been released on bail for further enquires to be undertaken.

On arrest two bicycles were found in the male’s address, these were seized, and officers have worked to identify the owners. Both owners have since been found and reunited with their stolen property.

I would encourage everyone to be vigilant when leaving bicycles in public. Please ensure that they are secured correctly, with a chain around the front wheel and frame of the bicycle. Never leave your bike unsecured when in public.

If you have been a victim of crime, I would encourage you to report this, or any other issues, to police on 101 – or in case of an emergency on 999.

This gives a true picture of what is happening in our area, helping us focus our efforts and direct resources where they are needed.”
