Bogus callers

·       We are investigating a report of a suspected bogus trader operating in the Biddick Hall area of               South Tyneside on Tuesday, November 22.

·       An investigation was launched after a man selling mattresses allegedly forced entry into an elderly         woman’s home.

·       He left the area before police arrival.

·       No items were stolen, and the woman was left shaken by the incident.

·       A number of enquiries are ongoing to locate the trader involved.

·       We would ask the public to remain vigilant towards this type of scam and talk to their loved ones.

·       Fraudsters often prey on vulnerable people in our communities and will go door-to-door trying to         secure a quick win.

·       They can be very persistent and persuasive when at the door of somebody who is elderly or                    vulnerable.

·       If someone turns up at your door unannounced and is acting suspiciously, do not hand over any             money, say you are not interested and lock the door.

·       We would ask anyone who believes they have been targeted in this way to always report it to                 police as soon as possible.

·       As ever, we would also ask the wider public, including businesses, to ensure doors, windows and             properties are kept secure and valuables out of view.

·       Officers will remain in the area in the coming days to carry out enquiries and offer reassurance.

·       Anyone with information or concerns can speak with an officer on duty, report using the ‘Tell Us             Something’ page of the Northumbria Police website or call 101.

·       In an emergency, or where a crime is taking place, always dial 999.
