Drugs warrant executed

Dear Resident

Officers have arrested two people and raided a property believed to be used in the production of Cannabis shatter as part of ongoing efforts to tackle drug supply.

The activity was carried out by officers from the Force’s Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) who targeted an address on Lobelia Avenue in Gateshead after receiving information from the local community about possible criminality.

Shortly after lunch time, officers executed their warrant and once inside the address, uncovered large quantities of cannabis bush and shatter – a honeycomb like product made by using large amounts of highly flammable butane gas.

A 43-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man were also arrested as part of the raids, on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of Class B drugs, and possession of Class A drugs. They have since been released under investigation.

Sergeant Andy Hyde was part of the operation which uncovered the illicit substances and praised the support officers were given from the local community.

He said: “Our communities can be assured that whenever information about this type of criminality comes our way, we’ll act on it.

“We know people have varying opinions about cannabis, but the truth is no one wants to live next door to drug dealers as they do not make good neighbours.

“Often there are people coming at all times of the day and night, properties usually have their electricity supply tampered with making them unsafe, fire hazards.

"Shatter cannabis also comes with its own dangers as it is stronger and made using highly flammable gas.

“Thanks to help from the local community, an investigation is underway and a large quantity of illegal drugs have been taken out of circulation and safely disposed of. Shutting down these types of operations and arresting those suspected of supplying drugs has a positive effect on neighbourhoods and ensure the North East remains a safe place.
